Suceeding, One Re-start at a Time.

Sometimes I wonder how people manage to accomplish anything.  I have a procrastination problem and a completion problem.  I can do the middle.  I do sometimes have a problem getting myself in gear and “staying the course” is a constant challenge.  Once I get started I can execute the necessary steps.  It’s repeating those steps indefinitely that I have trouble managing. I’ve come to the conclusion that success is a matter of starting over, and over, and over….

People who stay married all their life long aren’t necessarily happier than the rest of us.  They just have more staying power.  They get up and start over every day and never reach that point where it just doesn’t seem worth the effort.  The time never comes when they weigh the benefits against difficulties and decide to just give up.

People who work at the same job for 30 years and retire with a full pension are becoming rare animals.  Most of us, give up long before that point and start looking for something different to do.  We make all kinds of excuses, but the plain truth is boredom.  We get tired of doing the same thing, in the same place, with the same people day after day, after month, after year.  We’re always hoping for something better over the horizon.

We’re told success involves setting goals, then listing measurable steps to reach those goals and working at them consistently.  My granddaughter is taking a financial management class this semester.  Her first assignment was to set short-term and long-term goals, six months, a year, five years, etc. Then list the steps she would take to accomplish them.  The “experts” tell us this is the path to success in anything we undertake.

Life vs. Editorial

I can do the planning.  The planning is part of my procrastination.   I enjoy that part and I, sometimes, avoid finishing that stage for days or weeks.  I choose goals, set steps and start off with energy and determination, only to decide it’s not really working and start planning all over again.  When I finally have a plan that I can follow, it works well for a while.  Then along comes an interruption, a deviation is required and somehow I never get back on track.  So, I have to start the planning again.

The road to completion of a goal must have a completion.  There is a point at which you say, “Ok, that’s done.  Time to move on to the next thing.”  I just can’t seem to stay on that path.  Somehow, it gets twisted and heads back to the beginning with no noticeable branching.  I am trapped on a mobius strip.   I simply keep traveling the endless loop without ever reaching a destination.

This problem was not evident to me when I had a job to go to or classes to attend.  Those provided an external source that forced me to adhere to the path.  There were tasks to be completed and turned in to a supervisor or professor on a regular schedule.  When I write web copy or design a website for a client, there is a deadline holding me accountable.  Setting my own deadlines simply doesn’t have the same effect.

Since coming back from vacation, I have had trouble getting myself motivated again.  I have spent the last week meditating on points in my life when I didn’t follow through to my intended goal.  I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not really a character flaw per se.  I can complete a goal.  I did, after all, earn my bachelor’s degree and no on forced me to continue driving 90 miles each way to Murray for classes two or three days a week.  No one insisted I had to complete my homework and show up for class.  I did all that because it was a goal I had set myself.

Therefore, I can set myself a goal and follow it.  I simply have to make myself keep starting over every time life interrupts my plan.  I need to look on minor glitches as “snow days” and larger ones as semester breaks.

Moving the Furniture

The site remodel is still a work in progress.   I’m working on getting my categories updated and arranged.  I definitely plan to have a section on faith.  I’ve already posted some background information toward that end and I’m collecting material on my church history.  I may decide to make that a sub-category that will be ongoing.  I also plan to make divisions in the general health matters I had before:  one for interesting or important health news, one for exercise, one for recipes and diet info. Since I have a different blog now for my writing, I’m thinking the Creativity category will go away.

This site was in operation for several years as a family sharing site.  It still has photo galleries that belong to other family members.  I’m planning to try making those password protected so they can still get to them, but they will no longer be visible on the menu bar.  I have gallery features in many other places and don’t see this as a place where I want to store photos that don’t apply to the topics being discussed.

I’ve got a new plugin that should let me run several blog pages at once so that different categories post to individual pages instead of everything being lumped together.  I haven’t played with it yet, so I’m not sure exactly how it will work out, but it’s definitely a goal I’m working on setting up. I’m excited.  Broadening my horizons is always fun.

Check back every few days.  Things will be sporadic until the new schedule falls into place.   I’m working toward posting here at least twice and maybe three times a week.  I’ve postponed the church history piece because I’ve got more research materials on the way.  Tomorrow I’ll be doing a memoir piece.

Today: Tuesday, May 8, 2012

I am a Christian, a writer, a reader, a photographer, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a tree-hugger, an Independent voter and an introvert.  There have been things in my life I need to apologize for, but not any of the aforementioned.

I have a website for my authoring efforts, one for photos and travels, one for geeky computer stuff and this one.  All of them are using a blog format at the moment.  That may change someday, but not this day.

I plan to post to this blog every Tuesday.  Come by and visit.  I’ve turned on the commenting.  I like conversations.

Changing Lanes

I am tired of whining because the family members who used to participate in this website have moved on to other interests.  In all fairness, we’ve had issues with their ability to add new photos to the galleries at times but, lately, it seems they don’t even come by to check things out any more.

A while back, I got frustrated with being the only one here, more or less talking to myself.  I made the whole thing a blog and I think I’ve been pretty much alone ever since.  So this coming week, I am moving in a different direction.  Switching over to a more traveled road, so to speak.

This will now become a more public kind of space.  It’ll probably have a memoir feel at times, but I’ll also be looking at topics of interest to me.  Meditations on various subjects including, but not limited to, family relationships, genealogy, health, and just random subjects from current events.  I may even add in a little fictionalized history from time to time.

I hope to find company along the way.  Empty roads can be lonely, especially when it starts getting late.  I don’t need a constant companion, but occasional conversations keep the voices in my head at bay.

Testing, testing, this is a test….

I’ve added a new share plugin to this site, along with an SEO package.  Now to see how it all works.  The share buttons didn’t show up on the old posts.  This is just a short note to make sure they are working.  Apparently, the share icons don’t show up until you click the comment button.  So come on, give me some test material by leaving a comment.

It doesn’t have to be about this short little post.  Check out some of the galleries.  If you are a family member, contact me for a login and you too can share your thoughts freely with the world.  Oh, wait, you all have Facebook accounts for that.

Which is why the focus of this site is about to change as soon as I get through with setting up my writing platform and get my time management skills honed.  One of my projects this summer is to revamp this site unless I get more family activity going on it agan.
